Three Legged Stool

This sculpture visually narrates the National Guard credo.

“Success in serving with the guard is like a three-legged stool, the service member, family and civilian employer. If one of the legs can’t support the stool, the entire structure could collapse.”

Glass figures depict this symbiotic relationship.

Historical Timeline: A Tradition of Courage and Service

The first formal militia units in North America were established in the Massachusetts Bay Colony on December 13, 1636 to provide defense and public safety.

Today the National Guard acts as a first-line defense for the US, with state units deployed for domestic emergencies and disasters, as well as federal missions and deployment overseas.

This artwork portrays its evolution from 1636 to today.
